Instructions for Searching by License Tag Number (Complete or Partial)
A complete license tag number consists of the letter "L"
(for license tag), the two-digit year the license was issued, a hyphen (-), and
six digits (L00-000000).
1. Enter the letter "L" followed by the last two digits of the year ( L00, L01, L02, L03, L04, L05) without a space between the "L" and the two digits. The year is located above the license tag number. If the license tag is damaged and you cannot read the year, you can determine the year by the color and shape.
2. Enter a hyphen (-).
3. Enter the license tag number as a six-digit number,
even though the tag number may consist of less than six digits. Add the
appropriate number of zeros before the license tag number to make it a six-digit
number (000009, 000123, 002029, 029542). There should be no spaces between the
"L", dash, and digits.
For a partial license tag number, enter as many of the
six digits as you can read.
For example, to find the owner information on a 2003 license tag with the number 1234, you enter L03-001234. If you enter L03-1234, all the records beginning with 1234 will appear (123400, 123401, 123402, 123403, etc.). You will then have to begin a new search by adding 00 before 1234. To find the owner information on 2005 license tag with the number 100303, you enter L05-100303.
4. Click on the "Execute Search" button.
For a partial
license tag number, the database will display all the possible owner records
with the number you provided. Scroll through the records until the description
of the animal (breed, sex, color, etc.) matches the animal you have. You can
also eliminate some records by the distance between where you found the lost pet
and an owner's address. Most lost dogs will not travel more than a few miles
from its home. Small dogs and cats will travel blocks instead of miles from their homes.
